Gobbler On The Ground!

The weather has played a big factor in the lack of hunting success this season.  Rain has been in the forecast for what seems like every other day.  With heavy rain moving in late last night, Martin and Will decided to set up the Ameristep Tomtaker ground blind in a large field between two food plots which consists of tall, overgrown weeds and grass.  The blind was hidden perfectly!  At 7:10am, three turkeys appeared 70 yards from the blind.  The birds circled the field before they noticed the tom decoy at the edge of the overgrown brush.  As they neared, Will could see one of them was a tom with an eight inch beard.  The camera was rolling and the safety was off, but the gobbler never presented a good shot.  Ten minutes later, after settling back down, Martin spots a bigger, mature tom in a dead sprint for the decoy.  Before Will could get the gun mounted, the tom was in a full, sideways strut, slowly approaching the decoy.  The turkey then lunges on top of the decoy, driving the stake right through the foam body.  As soon as he hit the ground, Will laid the hammer down!  He's proud to say this is his first turkey!
