Hunting From The Pit

Geese could possibly be the most fun birds to hunt.  They're big, loud and they make a heck of a sound when they hit the ground.....or maybe that's because we don't have much of a choice this time of year.  But either way, we had a great morning!  With Stuart not able to hunt, we decided to break in his new in-ground pit.  With dense fog, no wind and a heavy mist, we knew it was either going to be a great hunt or a total bust.  The geese have not had the track record of flying into this particular field until later in the day, so our decoy spread was one to be reckoned with.  We set up every GHG full-body and shell we owned.  It was around 8:30am when the geese started flying.  Up until 10:00am it was non-stop action.  Every several minutes we had geese working the spread.  Most groups ranged anywhere from a pair to ten birds.  It couldn't have been better.  To top off the morning, we managed to kill two banded birds.  We left the pit with 24 geese.

Just a side note....for those of you who hunt pits with a retriever, be sure to introduce your hunting companion to the giant hole in the ground.  We had an unfortunate accident this morning with Carter's young black lab, Obie.  He went head first into the five-foot deep pit.  I guess if you can fool a lab you can fool a goose.  Luckily, Obie did not hurt himself.  He had a great morning with many multiple retrieves and it is evident he has what it takes to be a great hunting dog.
