Saturday Morning Goose Pluckin'

With the 2011 season dwindling, we decided to hunt close to home and with a large number of geese in the area, the impoundment was the place to hunt. The ice has plagued central Virginia since early December, so we have had very little time to hunt water between freezes. Luckily, this past week, we were blessed with  above freezing temperatures, so breaking the thin skim of ice was no problem.

Saturday marked the last day of duck season, so our hopes were high for a good duck shoot. At first light, the ducks worked perfectly into the spread. The first was a pair of mallards that left unscathed by seven eager gunners. Not soon after, more ducks worked in. One duck in particular dropped in pefectly....we all knew this bird looked different. As soon has he folded, Stu yelled "redhead!" Sure enough, it was a prime redhead drake!

It was 8am before we heard any geese. The first two groups were trios that seemed as if they were on the end of a string. Circling downwind one time and cupped right into our laps. We had a steady flow of birds throughout the morning with a great show at 10am. Several hundred birds worked the impoundment, looking like a tornado directly above us. After circling several times, the bulk of the birds moved on. We ended the morning with 23 geese, 5 mallards and a redhead.
