Opening Weekend of Ducks on Maryland's Eastern Shore

Stu,Billy, Chip, Richard and I headed up to the Shore for the duck opener. We hunted a cove on Fairlee Creek in bluebird weather on Saturday and ended up with 3 mallards. Very little shooting around us because of lack of ducks and poor conditions for hunting. Later Saturday we hunted a farm pond in Centreville and were able to scratch out 10 wood ducks. Once legal time ended the woodies really began to come in...the farm is roosting over 300 wood ducks so we had quite a roost show. Our party then headed down to Easton on Sunday where we spent some time at the Waterfowl Festival on its 40th anniversary. After filling up on soft shells and BBQ we headed down the shore to Crisfield. We hunted Monday and Tuesday in a variety of habitats and it was definitely the year of the Blue Wing Teal. With zero wind and warm temps the shooting was very slow but as always was a great trip. Although the teal and black ducks were plentiful, we just did not get any weather to keep them flying. Our final duck count was 4 mallards, 1 black duck, 10 woodies, and 11 Blue Wing. Low numbers for sure but considering the weather we probably did as well as can be expected. Now let the VA season begin!
